Hearing Tests

Treating hearing loss starts with a hearing evaluation. Hearing tests involve a painless process that measures hearing capacity in both ears. This identifies the specific type of hearing loss present and the degree of impairment in each ear. Here is what you can expect to experience during your hearing test:

Hearing Aid Fittings

Following an audiological evaluation, our team helps you choose the right pair of hearing aids to address your needs. Our hearing aid fittings ensure that your hearing aids are fitted and programmed accurately to provide optimal hearing.

At your fitting appointment, we will verify that your hearing aids provide the correct amplification for your specific hearing needs. Our verification process includes Real Ear Measurement. Additionally, we program your hearing aid settings and walk you through the process of proper care and maintenance of your devices. Our team will assist you in the physical handling of your new devices. Your hearing aids may require batteries or wax guards, and we’ll show you how to properly replace these items.

Real Ear Measurement (REM) is regarded by the audiology community as the absolute gold standard for hearing aid fittings. We are proud to be one of the few practices to offer REM to fit every one of our hearing aids. Your devices are fitted to your specific needs based on the exact acoustic profile of your ears. To do this, a small microphone with the hearing aid is placed in the ear canal to take an exact measurement. This kind of measurement leads to vastly improved experiences with hearing aid and high satisfaction rates. Studies show patients are much more satisfied with their hearing aids using REM. The process is time-consuming and the equipment more expensive, but our track record of happy patients shows that it is more than worth it.

Balance Testing

Experiencing dizziness, vertigo, and issues with balance are symptoms of a balance disorder. Addressing and alleviating these symptoms starts with balance testing which helps identify underlying causes. Balance tests are noninvasive and painless, common types of balance tests include:

This test is another helpful tool used to measure hearing loss and other neural disorders in the auditory pathways like balance disorders. The ABR test evaluates the auditory nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. It involves placing small stickers or electrodes on the head that record brain wave activity in response to sounds heard through headphones. The electrodes measure how nerves related to hearing are responding to sound. The patient simply rests and wears these headphones as the hearing healthcare specialist facilitates the test.

New Device Offers Solution For Ringing In Ears

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is one of the most common symptoms of hearing loss. It is characterized by hearing a buzzing, ringing, or clicking-like noise in one or both ears when no external sound is present. This can be severely disruptive - impacting sleep, ability to complete daily tasks, straining communication, etc. Like hearing loss, there are no cures for tinnitus but there are effective ways it can be managed, alleviating the toll it can take.

The most common treatment for tinnitus management is sound therapy. Sound therapy programs for tinnitus use a process referred to as habituation which retrains how the brain perceives tinnitus. This is designed to mask tinnitus, lessening the sound and allowing people to better focus. There are different methods that can be used to do this including playing different relaxing and soft sounds - rain, waves, white noise, soft music, etc. - which creates ambient noise that alleviates tinnitus.

Custom Hearing Protection

In addition to treating hearing loss, our practice is invested in prevention and protecting hearing health from further impairment. One of the most common causes of hearing loss is exposure to loud noise which can cause irreparable damage to the inner ear. Our practice makes custom hearing protection which reduces the absorption and impact of loud noise. This includes taking molds of your ear and creating custom earplugs. This safety measure is a great way to protect your hearing health and reduce the risk of further impairment.

Assistive Listening Devices

In addition to hearing aids, there is a range of hearing aid technology that supports and protects hearing health. Assistive listening devices are hearing technologies that amplify sound, enhancing sound quality and creating greater accessibility. Our practice has extensive expertise and experience with assistive listening devices and we are able to recommend additional tools that can maximize your hearing, creating seamless listening experiences.
